Sıra kültürümüze ve geleneklerimize mi geldi! Gulay S.
If you are not married for sometime, you will never like nor understand Pembe. No woman (I repeat no woman) wants to share her husband with another woman. I hope what happened to Pembe never happens to me, I can't even imagine the agonizing pain of my husband involving another woman. And no woman who wants another woman's husband will get empathy. Does the creator/ script writer want the audience to like Alev? She somehow believes it to be justified. Forgetting she is a home-wrecker. Not only contemptuous of Pempe but also despises her for being protective of her family. (If this script is based on a real story, I hope not for humanity's sake. And if Alev's character really exists) Should I respect Alev for refusing Apo's card/ money offer? No, I don't! Why settle for the ground when you can have the sky. Alev wants it all! And should I feel sorry for Doğa who tries to take control from Pempe and says until her promiscuous aunt comes and takes it over, she will be the boss, hiring help, changing decorations disregarding all the people who've been living there for years, and who are the actual owners. No, I don't.Pempe is rich enough to live the life of a queen. Buying expensive cars, going Europe-shopping, hiring help, bossing them around. Instead she is very friendly with house workers. Cooks with them, talks with them, she never puts them down, she has a strong sense of noblesse oblige. So is her daughter Nursema, she can live like Görkem. But the Ünal-Family chooses to live a modest life.I don't know Doğa's intentions, it could be love. But her whole family wanted a piece of what Doğa had! Lots of money. Her aunt Alev, her mom Kıvılcım, her dad Kayhan. Grandma wasn't young enough to get a man but she had convinced the family's oldest son, Mustafa, to open a business. Even Alev's worker, Umut wanted a piece, whose character is also detestable as much as Alev's. Kıvılcım's strong reactions to the "religious" words. Carefully avoiding them in her dialogues such as inşallah, maşallah. Even my Christian husband who only can speak a few-word Turkish often uses those words (he picked up from my Turkish friends.) You don't have to be religious nor practice religion. But you have to understand the culture. I am not sure if I decode the creator's motivation. I am highly disappointed and disturbed by so very-easy divorces, (do divorce lawyers need jobs?) relationships outside the marriages, portraying Turkish culture in ways that changes in our traditions as western modernization. I also found decays in family structures very concerning, raising questions more so for the future. And more surprisingly, Turkish audiences accept these changes. Upvoting Alev's and Apo's relationship. Approving marriage-breakdown as an expected outcome. Proposing Pempe should've left and that would've been an honorable thing to do, just like Gökhan's wife. Where I would expect Turkish women to show serious repercussions. This concerns me primarily, suggesting cheating, breaks in marriages are NOT that uncommon. Perhaps starting to be a fad. Benefiting men who seek infidelity which otherwise, had been and would've been very challenging within old-fashion, Turkish-traditions.I remember Doğa's reaction to Pembe, when Pembe found out Apo's relationship with Alev and called Alev a whore. Doğa said "You can't talk about my aunt that way" Seriously?Had my aunt done what Alev did I would be first calling her whore siding my mother in law. The creator is giving mixed, obfuscating messages to the audience. Are we supposed like, empathy for a home-wrecker? Has the creator been in Alev's shoes and telling us (if it were your husband) just pack and leave, that's the honorable thing to do?  Alev is not only condescending Pembe but also belittling Nursema, saying " Yeah, you stayed in my place but don't think I'm your friend" Nursema is not good enough to be Alev's friend but her father, Apo is, to sleep with! ( And why Nursema, who got her higher education in U.S. universities, belongs to a very wealthy family, lacks self-confidence and thinks poorly of herself?) She is forever in debt, grateful to illiterate Alev, just for a few days' stay. Even after Apo gives Alev an expensive, $58K watch for helping his daughter. For $58K you can stay in my house for a year (I live in Los Angeles, California) in the condition of removing your shoes before entering my home. (Take them off or stay outside, no shoes allowed entering my home.It saddens me to see changes in Turkish culture, western admiration, and decay in family structures. Those values should be handled delicately (in your books, stories, movies, tv-shows) as our legacy to pass the future generations. Create and show me all types of characters (fiction or real) but make sure to condemn the bad, reward the good at the end; and every now and then. That's how you keep our legacy alive.
